Most Practice Owners view malpractice risk and compliance as check-the-box administrative chores. They belong in a folder, tucked away until an inspection or a rainy day.

But as a Strategic Advisor, I look at risk differently. I look at it as Value At Risk (VAR). If your practice is a high-performing engine, then a lack of documentation, outdated infection control protocols, or a missing social media policy aren't just clerical gaps. They’re cracks in the engine block.

The Math of a Closed Claim

According to a 14-year study of dental malpractice claims conducted by The Doctors Company (TDC Group), the average indemnity payment for a dental claim is $116,0001. Their research highlights that many of these adverse events are preventable through proactive risk mitigation and structured safety measures. Often, a dentist does not lose a case because of clinical skill; they lose because the chart fails to tell the full story. Even when a doctor wins, the defense costs and premium hikes are a direct hit to the bottom line. Thorough documentation isn’t just a legal requirement. It’s a financial asset that protects your net profit.

Why Risk Impacts Staff Retention

Hiring is one of the most difficult parts of running a dental office today. While many people focus on pay or culture, operational safety is a major factor in keeping good employees. High-performing assistants and hygienists want to work in a professional environment with clear standards. When an office lacks strict protocols for infection control or social media usage, the best employees feel the liability. Replacing a high-level dental assistant or hygienist can cost a practice $10k–$25k in recruiting, training, and lost production.

Moving Toward Active Protection

When developing your Strategic Roadmap, my focus extends beyond just examining the profit and loss statement. I identify the operational leaks that threaten your margins. My goal is to move your office away from reactive management toward a culture of intentionality. Protecting your profit requires making sure that the work you’ve already done is safe and defensible.
